Company: Our History
SIT's method derives from the work of Genrich Altschuller, an engineer from the former Soviet Union. Through his exhaustive study of many thousands of patents, Altschuller came to see that creative solutions share common patterns, and, based on this insight, developed a methodology for generating innovative ideas. His method gained popularity in Israel in the 1970's, and served as the basis for SIT - Systematic Inventive Thinking.
SIT's method adapts Altschuller's ideas to make them relevant beyond the realm of engineering; today SIT is applicable to nearly any enterprise which requires innovative and creative thinking.
Since the founding of SIT Ltd in 1996, the method has been successfully applied in hundreds of companies and organizations, across a wide range of sectors, and in dozens of countries.
The SIT method is based on the insight that innovative solutions share common patterns, and that because they do, creativity can be generated through a specific, structured process.
Historically and conceptually, SIT is based on a method called TRIZ . TRIZ was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1940's, by Genrich Altschuller, a chemical engineer whose analysis of over many thousands of patents revealed the existence of patterns of inventiveness. During the 1970's, one of Altschuller's students, Ginadi Filkovsky, immigrated to Israel and joined the Open University in Tel Aviv. He began teaching TRIZ and adapting it to the needs of both Israeli and international hi-tech companies. Two Ph.D. students, Jacob Goldenberg and Roni Horowitz, joined Filkovsky, focusing their research on developing and simplifying the methodology. Their work formed the basis of the SIT method we use today.

In 1996, SIT Ltd. was established as a joint venture between partners from academia and the advertising world. Since then, SIT has been taught to thousands of professionals around the world, through projects, courses, and publications, creating a wide network of practitioners, and resulting in products, marketing campaigns and original solutions to problems. The SIT team, together with its academic researchers and business partners, continually refines and develops the method, applying it to new areas in novel ways.

Bottom Line
Altschuller's idea - that creative solutions share common patterns - immigrates (along with Altschuller's student) to Israel, and merges with Western creativity techniques. The offspring, born in 1996: SIT.
FAQ
What is the difference between SIT and TRIZ (Genrich Altschuller's method)?

SIT and TRIZ have much in common, since they share the same origins. TRIZ originates out of Genrich Altschuller's insight that innovative solutions share common patterns, and SIT is based on TRIZ. But despite their common heritage, SIT and TRIZ are different in three significant ways:

TRIZ is primarily a problem - solving tool for engineers, while SIT is designed and used for a wide range of applications (product development, advertising, marketing communications, problem solving, conflict resolution and others);
SIT is limited to a small set of tools (five) and principles (six), which means that it's easy to learn and apply (and doesn't require any software).
SIT emphasizes ways in which users can overcome fixedness in their thinking, and obstacles to their creativity.
