Gamal Sarid
"Optimization is not always optimal..."

Gamal Sarid, an Israeli manufacturer for grinding products, operates in a conservative industry. Most of the innovations in the grinding business are technological improvements and optimizations by large corporations dominating the market.

Thus, Gamal Sarid’s decision to commission SIT to lead a project in search of innovative products was not a trivial one and they decided to look for ideas that would both be feasible using its existing technology, and make business sense for the company. Throughout the project a total of 70 new product ideas were developed, of which 10 were considered by the participants to have the right combination of technological feasibility and economical attraction. Gamal Sarid’s Lubriline™, the 1st of the 7 ideas that were eventually implemented, managed to change the position of the company in the industry by breaking one of its underlying paradigms.

It turns out that a cutting disc does not need to be hard to cut – softer materials actually cut faster! The only problem with these softer materials is that they wear out much faster than the slower-cutting hard discs. Traditionally, the industry faced this challenge by … you guessed it … optimizations. Such optimizations may help to enhance the cutting speed and/or the durability of the disc to a certain extent. But to introduce a more substantial improvement we need to break away of this “sum zero” game, either by developing a whole new solution (e.g. a new type of grinding material) or by breaking some hidden fixednesses around the way we do things with the existing technology.

The Lubriline™ does exactly that. As part of the hard material design it incorporates a strip made of softer material and lubes. This new design allows the soft strip to absorb the strain caused by the harder parts of the disc, while the lubes help keep the temperature low. The results are way beyond what you may expect utilizing optimization. The substantial improvement in grinding efficiency does not come at the expense of the disc’s lifespan – it actually improves lifespan by 30 percent!

Camal-Sarid’s Lubriline continues to receive recognition worldwide.
