Taking Innovation to a Whole New Level

A spirit level must be leveled – right? So what’s the point of un-leveling one of the vials?

During SIT’s work with Kapro – then a small Israeli manufacturer of spirit levels – we were fortunate enough to help generate products that are so intelligent yet so simple they would make spectators go “how did we not think of this before?”

Arguably the most pronounced example is the Topgrade level, which was generated using SIT’s Multiplication tool. Applying Multiplication, the participants were asked to multiply existing components of the product, while introducing a change to the multiplied copy. When the tool led us to consider adding a vial that is different than the original in degree, the participants were extremely skeptic. A spirit level must be leveled – they said – so what’s the point of un-leveling one of the vials? That's simply preposterous...

But with the help of some stubbornness on the facilitation side, and further thinking on the participants' side, an idea started to form. How about using this deformed vial to measure consistent slopes – such as the ones found in bathrooms & gardens? It turns out that no solution for such slops existed, and constructers were actually using various means to deform their levels to measure such slopes (e.g. wrapping masking tape on one side of the level.) This insight led to the development of a series of levels with vials set at 0°, 1° and 2° that could be used regularly (using the 0° vial) or to create consistent slopes (using either the 1° or 2° vials). The idea was heavily patented, and the product became a global blockbuster.

This is really the realization of the professional dream we started with. But one of the most interesting aspects of this story is the fact that the technology to develop Kapro’s Topgarde was available the day spirit levels were developed. Yet, the fixedness around the product was so strong that it took thousands of years, and SIT’s multiplication tool, to break it…
