Mastering the SIT Innovation Method

Let me share with you some tips and advice on how to master the techniques and principles of Systematic Inventive Thinking.

First, work on mastering one at a time, not all five at once. It’s better to limit rather than dilute. Don’t overwhelm yourself trying to be an expert in all five right away.
One way to develop your expertise in the SIT techniques is with pattern spotting. A key premise of SIT is that for thousands of years, innovators have used patterns in their inventions, usually without even realizing it. Those patterns are now embedded into the products and services you see around you, almost like the DNA of a product. You want to develop your ability to see these patterns as a way to improve your use of them.
When you go to the store or when you’re watching TV and you see some new, innovative product, try to figure out which of the five SIT techniques could have been used to generate that novel concept. You’ll begin to realize that these patterns are all around you. That helps boost your confidence in the method and in the existence of these patterns.
At some point, you’ll use pattern spotting automatically. You’ll see some new product or service and instantly your mind will try to search which of the five techniques applies. When you get to that point, you have what we affectionately call, the SIT virus. It means you are well on your way to mastering the method.
Another way to master SIT is with mental simulation. Mental simulation is used by athletes and other professionals to improve their performance. They mentally simulate performing an event or series of events as a way to groove it into their mind.
You can also use mental simulation with the SIT techniques. When you’re out and about in your daily routine, pick an object randomly and pick one of the five SIT techniques. See if you can mentally work through the steps of the method to invent some new clever product or service right on the spot.
For example, imagine you’re at the airport standing in line at security. Pick an object or the process itself and see if you can apply one of the techniques to create some beneficial service or a new product. By mentally stimulating the SIT techniques, you’re going to perfect their use and you’re going to build your confidence in your ability to apply the techniques on demand.
While learning the SIT method, be sure to leverage social media. Find other people who use the SIT method. Share ideas and stories of how it’s been used in practice. Join this growing community of SIT practitioners.

Innovation Sighting: S.I.T. Patterns in Refrigerators

This month’s Innovation Sighting comes to us from Dr. Steven Palter.  Dr. Palter is a  gynecologic fertility specialist and a true innovator in the medical field.  He learned the S.I.T. method recently, so he knows how to spot the five innovation patterns of S.I.T. in everyday products and services.

This one is a new refrigerator launched by LG at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.  It is the LGLFX31945ST French Door Refrigerator with Door-in-Door.  The new Door-in-Door is a classic example of the Multiplication Technique.  To use Multiplication, make a list of the components of the product, select a component and copy it, then change the copied component along some variable such as size, location, or other attribute.  Once you create this Virtual Product, try to identify new benefits or markets served by this configuration.

In this example, the door was copied then changed to be located just inside the existing one.  It creates a whole new area for storing food.  This increases the storage capacity of the refrigerator without increasing the overall exterior size.  Take a look:

LG didn’t stop there. They also launched a new innovation in refrigerators called the LG Blast Chiller. It allows you to vary the temperature delivered to an item depending on the type of food or beverage. Does that pattern sound familiar?  If you have studied the S.I.T. method, you would recognize the Attribute Dependency pattern. Take a look:

Very cool! I like using refrigerators in my S.I.T. training sessions because there are so many ways to apply the five techniques to yield new-to-the-world innovations.  Most people find it surprising that you can innovate a concept that dates back the ancient Egyptians.

Are You More Innovative Than You Think?

You may be surprised to find many of your products and services conform to the five innovation patterns of Systematic Inventive Thinking.  If so, it means your employees are predisposed to use innovation patterns when developing new  products.  Like many innovators, they are using patterns probably without realizing it. Given this predisposition to using innovation templates, a company can realize huge gains in innovation effectiveness by taking the next step.

Take the case of a large industrial company in the energy sector.  It leads the industry producing a product that is relatively simple in design but incredibly challenging to produce.  Despite its strong reputation and market success, the company worries it is not innovative.  Yet when I reviewed its project pipeline, I spotted concepts with each of the five patterns of S.I.T. (Subtraction, Task Unification, Multiplication, Attribute Dependency, and Division).  The teams did not use S.I.T. in the classic way (apply templates and work backwards using “Function Follows Form” to find a potential benefit).  Instead, they used trial and error, experimentation, and good old fashioned tinkering.  Their innovations embody the templates nevertheless.

These teams are more innovative than they think.  They are one short step away from applying S.I.T..  They already have these patterns inside them, so now it’s just a matter of extracting them and putting them to use in a more disciplined way.  Using S.I.T. on their products and processes will force new combinations and concepts that they would not have thought of otherwise.  The method will “bootstrap” their innovation performance to a new high level.

Super Bowl Innovation

At $3 million dollars for a thirty second spot, Super Bowl advertisers need to create the best, most innovative commercials possible.  How?  Creating innovative TV commercials is more effective when using patterns embedded in other innovative commercials.  Professor Jacob Goldenberg and his colleagues discovered that 89% of 200 award winning ads fall into a few simple, well-defined design structures.  Their book, “Cracking the Ad Code,” defines eight of these structures and provides a step-by-step approach to use them.

Here are the eight tools:
1. Unification
2. Activation
3. Metaphor
4. Subtraction
5. Extreme Consequence
6. Absurd Alternative
7. Inversion
8. Extreme Effort
Let’s see how well 2011 Super Bowl ads fit these patterns.

Innovation Sighting: New World Order with Attribute Dependency

One way to develop stronger innovation skills is to practice pattern recognition…seeing an inherent pattern used to create innovative products and services.  Pattern recognition "builds innovation muscle" and makes you more adept at applying patterns to other products and services.  Here is an interesting example that uses the S.I.T. pattern called Attribute Dependency.  This pattern creates new (or breaks existing) dependencies between attributes of a product or service.  It can also create dependencies between attributes of the product or service and its external environment.

Do you see the Attribute Dependency pattern in this map?

NewWorld

This "new world order" map creates a dependency between a country's population size and its land mass.  By correlating the two attributes, countries are located where their population is best matched to physical area.  Take a moment to study it.  It is worth the look.

While the map is interesting, one might question its value.  It is hypothetical as no country is going to move its population to another location.  If one defines innovation as NEW, USEFUL, and SURPRISING ("Gee, I never would have thought of that."), the map meets two out of three criteria.

To make it truly innovative, we use "Function Follows Form" and envision potential benefits of such a map.  We take the form of the map as is, and we hypothesize new functions it can perform.  Here are some potential uses:

1.  Training Tool:  I can imagine using this in my innovation course as a way to demonstrate Attribute Dependency.  Rather than just show students this map, however, I would have them take an original world map and apply the pattern in a disciplined way.  They might come up with this same configuration, but it is more likely they will create their own, even more novel "new world order."  After the exercise, I would share this map as a way to reinforce the idea.

2.  Research Tool:  Perhaps this map could be used in political science research to see what it says about countries and their policies.  Is there a difference between countries that have different population densities in terms of their economies, politics, and social norms?  How would things change if their population density was normalized to the rest of the world?

3.  Foreign Policy Tool:  Perhaps this map could suggest new strategies for conducting foreign policy.  What if Mexico and Iran really were next to each other?  What would it do to each country in terms of trade or conflict?  What if Germany had a lot of the oil-producing region?  Would oil be distributed more equitably?

4.  Trend Spotting Tool:  Perhaps the map could help suggest new trends in cooperation and conflict.  If India and the United States shared a border, what would the new relationship look like, and is it likely this could occur?  What new languages might emerge in certain regions given the new locations.  How would religion change?

5.  Corporate Strategy Tool:  Could this map suggest modifications to other types of maps that would help companies see new strategic opportunities?  For example, what if a company created a different map of its customer's locations based on some attribute such as "cost to serve" or "future growth potential."  Perhaps it would suggest new ways to service customers or target new customers.
